Learning to use a cast net isn't too difficult, and when you can catch your own bait, you never have to worry about ending a fishing trip early because you ran out of bait. Here are things to look for when buying a new cast net.
Weight Of The Net
The bottom of a cast net has weights attached to it so the net falls to the bottom of the water, catching tiny fish along the way. The more weights on the net, the heavier it is and the quicker it falls. You'll probably catch more bait with a heavier net, but a heavy net is more difficult to cast properly.
If you're a beginner, you may want to start with a lighter net so you can practice and get the hang of casting before you advance to a heavy net that is more cumbersome to throw.
Size Of The Net
Cast nets come in different sizes too that are measured in feet. The measurement is for the radius, so the full diameter of the net when open will be twice the footage of the net size. Starting with a smaller net might be a good idea since they are easier to throw, but you can also learn how to cast as a beginner with a large net if you think you'll need a larger size later. However, you may not need a large net if you're fishing alone.
The largest nets are more suitable for deep sea fishing when several people share a boat since a big net catches more fish. Plus, if you have kids, your kids can usually handle a small net and gain a skill that will benefit them later in life if they take up fishing as a serious hobby. Also, make sure you comply with fishing laws in the state where you go fishing because net size may have a maximum size limit.
Mesh Size
If there's a particular type of fish you usually try to catch, you might have a bait preference. If you know the size of the bait you want, then look for the appropriate mesh size in the net you buy. Your net should have the size, weight, and mesh size listed on it, and it may also show the fish size most appropriate for the net you're buying. The larger the mesh, the quicker the net sinks when you cast it. The smaller the mesh, the more fish you catch.
Another thing to check when it comes to mesh is what the material is made from. You can buy monofilament or nylon nets. Monofilament mesh sinks faster and is less visible in the water.
