Two Tips For Ex-Ballet Dancers Who Want To Set Up Their Own Businesses
Posted on: 23 July 2020
If you would like to work for yourself and you have lots of ballet experience, here are a couple of pointers that could help you.
Consider getting your barre instructor training certification
If you're an ex-ballet dancer, then you might think that the most effective route to becoming your own boss might be to become a self-employed ballet teacher. However, if you're determined to work for yourself, it would be sensible to offer more than just ballet classes. A lot of people who are interested in ballet do not want to try it because they find it intimidating or because they mistakenly assume it is only for those who are highly graceful and dainty. Barre is the activity that these people tend to turn to, as it is just as physically beneficial as ballet (perhaps even more so in some ways) and incorporates the beauty of this dance genre but is not intimidating or elitist in any way.
Because of this, if you sign up to get your barre instructor training certification from a company like SoulBody Fitness and start offering barre classes as well as ballet classes, you will find it far easier to get enough students each week to keep your business in the black. Due to your ballet experience, you will sail through this training process (whilst barre is not a form of ballet, it is heavily inspired by it and so should pose no difficulty to someone who has spent years participating in this demanding dance genre).
Don't spend money on leasing a massive teaching studio
After getting your certification, you might, at first, want to lease the largest teaching studio you can afford so that you can maximise the number of people who attend your ballet and barre classes. However, it would actually be better to rent a smaller studio and offer classes to small groups and on a one-on-one basis.
The reason for this is as follows; you will be better able to guide your students and notice when they make errors that you have to correct if you work with fewer people in your classes. This will provide your students with a better class experience and help them to improve faster. It is also savvier from a business perspective, as people are happy to pay more for one-to-one and small-group classes, precisely because they know that the quality of the classes will be very high.
